Our History

Few people realize that foxhunting has its awakening in America about the same time that it did in England. As the sport developed, it became a favorite pastime of several USA presidents, senators, congressmen and Supreme Court justices.

Riding to hounds, or foxhunting, has been present in Western Pennsylvania as far back as the 1770's and has been a consistent part of Ligonier, Pennsylvania history. In 1921 a pack of English bred fox hounds was brought to the United States under the watchful eye of Master, Richard K. Mellon, Esq. and a tradition was born.

Master of Foxhounds

William Burkland, MFH

A dedicated horseman and lifelong foxhunter, William Burkland serves as the leader of the Rolling Rock Hunt. His extensive experience and steady hand have been pivotal in steering the hunt through its recent seasons, ensuring the preservation of our traditions while fostering the growth of our sporting community.

Huntsman

Mackenzie Wertman

From an inquisitive child in Elverson, Pennsylvania, with no prior horse experience to a seasoned professional carrying the horn, Mackenzie Wertman’s path to the huntsman’s position is a testament to dedication and mentorship.

His early foundation was built in the field with Sandy Dunn of the Kimberton Foxhounds, followed by several successful seasons whipping for Rich Gable at Gable/Swisher Hounds.

Mack’s career gained significant momentum in 2019 when he joined the staff at Mr. Stewart’s Cheshire Foxhounds, eventually serving as their huntsman for the 2022–2023 season.

Most recently, Mack spent two seasons hunting the hounds at Bridlespur Hunt in Eolia, Missouri. There, he made his mark by integrating Penn-Marydel bloodlines to create a highly effective, fast-paced pack known for its discipline while pursuing coyote and bobcat.

The Rolling Rock Hunt is proud to have Mackenzie Wertman leading our hounds this season.

Joint Master of Foxhounds

Mark Teroerde, MFH

Mark Teroerde joins Mr. Burkland as Joint Master, continuing a deep-rooted family legacy in the field. Following in the footsteps of his father, Fritz Teroerde, MFH (ret.), Mark brings a profound respect for the history of our hunt and a forward-looking commitment to its future.

Together, the unwavering leadership and shared vision of Will and Mark are the driving forces behind the Rolling Rock Hunt, ensuring that the sport continues to thrive for generations to come.

First Whipper-In

Amanda Wertman

Amanda’s lifelong dedication to horsemanship began in infancy, evolving from early years in the hunter/jumper and eventing arenas into a deep, abiding passion for the hunt field.

Her journey in foxhunting began with an invitation to the River Hills Foxhounds Children’s Hunt in 2009, an experience that ignited a pursuit she would follow for the next 15 years.

After serving as a junior whip, Amanda was appointed First Whip of the River Hills Foxhounds in 2016. During her tenure, she balanced a rigorous schedule of hunting four days a week with competitive show jumping under the tutelage of James C. Paxson, a renowned Master, Huntsman, and Grand Prix trainer.

In 2024, Amanda moved to Missouri, where she continued her work in the field at Bridlespur Hunt. She is now thrilled to join the Rolling Rock Hunt staff as First Whip, working alongside her husband and our huntsman, Mackenzie Wertman, while also managing the Colonial Stables hunt horses.
